Special Assignment

The Court Services Officer assists with the security at the Charlotte County Justice Center. This member has an understanding of pertinent statutes, laws, and courtroom regulations. This position is considered essential under the CCSO Emergency Plan. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Court Services Supervisor and is reviewed through observation and conferences.

Essential Job Functions
  • Enforce laws and constitution, maintaining proficiency in all duties of a law enforcement officer, including the satisfactory completion of all periodic training and testing. 
  • Reviews contents of records, court papers and other legal documents for accuracy and completeness to execute or enforce court orders and directives. 
  • Provides information and assistance to citizens making inquiries, ensures public safety and renders aid as needed or directed in keeping with sound customer service practices but without giving legal advice. 
  • Responds to emergencies, assess situations, and calls for necessary assistance. 
  • Reviews incidents and case histories as needed to fulfill duties when needed. 
  • Directs internal or external parties to appropriate agencies or groups in accordance with VINE or other state and federal laws or guidelines. 
  • Maintains and audits databases or spreadsheets, creates/distributes reports as required or directed to provide statistics or monitor progress of goals and objectives.
  • Keeps records of all activities in accordance with established policies and procedures, complying with said policies and procedures both in public, intra-agency and other inter-agency. 
  • Populates or queries state and national databases as required, including data required to apprehend wanted individuals, monitor offenders, or locate stolen property and audit at specified intervals to ensure data integrity. 
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties or projects as assigned. 
  • Escorts, maintains Care, Custody and Control to prisoners brought before the court. 
  • Maintains security for designated judicial and county areas; conducts screening of visitors and court participants. 
  • Conducts searches of and collects contraband from persons who enter the Justice Center, including evidence and personal items, to assure the building is clear of contraband, weapons, explosives, or any other dangerous substance or item. 
  • Provides protective services to Judges and staff, court attorneys, litigants, witnesses, and jurors as directed or required
  • Observes all persons entering the Justice Center, their movements, and their activities, and prohibits access to restricted areas. 
  • Monitors entry to the building by magnetometer, hand-held scanning wand, and the use of x-ray machine, and other similar security scanning tools. 
  • Make arrests ensuring that all appropriate paperwork is complete and accurate and that proper procedures have been followed. 
  • Provides any assistance required during sessions, including any administrative/clerical support requested.
  • Coordinates juror services when/as needed.

  • Ability to establish and maintain confidential, accurate and complete files and records. 
  • Ability to operate all equipment listed in the “Equipment Used” section. 
  • Ability to properly roll fingerprints. 
  • Ability to use and maintain firearms in accord with standards and qualifications. Knowledge of pertinent statutes, laws, rules, regulations, and directives relative to the conduct of court proceedings, security of inmates, injunctions for protection, criminal process, and civil process. 
  • Knowledge of practices, techniques, and equipment necessary to provide a safe and effective court environment. Knowledge of standard forms, reports, and related documents relative to the work.

Education or Equivalent Experience Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Prefer two (2) year degree or currently enrolled. 
  • Completion of State approved training and certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in compliance with the requirements of the State of Florida.   
  • Annually pass the physical abilities test of a certified officer through term of appointment. 
  • Must not be on any disciplinary or performance (PIP) probation.

FDLE Physical Attributes

Gross Neuromuscular/Cardiorespiratory = Strength/Power-the ability to exert force, Muscular Endurance-the ability to perform repeated muscular contractions of up to a few minutes duration (this includes running short distances and other muscular challenges which invoke the anaerobic energy systems of the body). Mobility - locomotion, the ability to move about. Flexibility - the ability to move the major joints of the body through their range of motion. Agility - the ability to make well-coordinated movements. Aerobic Capacity - the ability to perform repeated muscular contractions over an extended period of time, exceeding several minutes and up to an hour or more. Physical Effort Required

Must be able to climb stairs, stand for considerable length of time, transport, and restrain people. Must be able to perform work pushing/pulling/grappling of persons or objects up to 150 pounds of force occasionally: 20 pounds frequently (uniform vest, belt): and 10 pounds constantly. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, and kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions. Must be physically fit to pass annual Physical Agility Test. Must possess the visual acuity to operate an office assigned vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things on patrol 24/7. (Sunrise, day, sunset, night hour driving). Hear and understand speech and radio transmissions.

Working Conditions

Officer must be able to work at any time his/her services are needed and may work long hours as required. Some inmate contacts. Member will be assigned to foot patrol outside the perimeter of the interior of the building. Member will be exposed indoors to a ventilated and air-conditioned environment; however, occasional power outages may occur. Required foot patrol outside the building will expose member to extreme heat, humidity and rain, etc. Whether on or off duty, officer is expected to be armed and to exercise his/her arrest authority whenever necessary.
NOTE: All employees who have direct inmate contact are required to have a medical exam/screening which includes a PPD (TB screening) prior to job assignment. Any positives on the PPD will require further evaluations by the Health Department. Re-examination shall be given according to a defined need or schedule. This requirement is to protect the employee, the agency and the inmates from any physical condition that might impact the ability of the employee to perform their job in a safe and efficient manner.
